Disk Recon 14.1
Menu and Toolbar
The menu and toolbar are located at the top of the disk recon window.
They both give you access to functions and settings that you can use in the program.
When certain menus or buttons are disabled, it means that they are not
applicable in the current situation.
Menu
File Menu
- Shell Integration — Adds a "Disk Recon" entry to the Windows right-click context menu in File Explorer, so you can start a scan on any folder without opening the application first.
- Disable Shell Integration — Removes the right-click context menu entry.
- Map Network Drive — Opens the Windows dialog to map a network share to a drive letter, making it available to Disk Recon as a regular drive.
- Disconnect Network Drive — Disconnects a previously mapped network drive.
- Export to MS Excel — Exports the current result set and opens it directly in Excel (shortcut: Ctrl-E).
- Export to HTML — Saves results as an HTML file (shortcut: Ctrl-H).
- Export to Text file — Saves results as a fixed-width plain text file.
- Export to CSV — Saves results as a comma-separated values file.
- Export to XML — Saves results as an XML file with an optional XSLT stylesheet.
- Copy file list to Clipboard — Copies file paths from the result grid to the clipboard (file names only, no folder paths).
- Copy file list (+folders) to Clipboard — Copies full file paths including the parent folder path.
- Options — Opens the Options dialog to configure scan parameters, colors, and duplicate folder settings.
- Exit — Closes Disk Recon.
View menu
- Show Folder Tree — Toggles the folder navigation tree on the left side of the window (shortcut: Ctrl-T).
- Show Image Preview — Toggles the image preview panel on the right (shortcut: Ctrl-I).
- Show File Preview — Toggles the file content preview panel at the bottom (shortcut: Ctrl-F).
- Sizes in B / KB / MB / GB — Sets the display unit for all file and folder sizes.
- Automatic Size display — Lets Disk Recon pick the most readable unit automatically based on the magnitude of each value.
Folder Sizes
- Load Tree Results — Loads a previously saved Folder Sizes scan from a
.drtreefile, so you can review an earlier result without rescanning. - Save Tree Results — Saves the current Folder Sizes scan to a
.drtreefile for later comparison or sharing. - Collapse All — Collapses the entire folder tree to show only the top-level folders.
- Expand Level 1 / 2 / 3 — Expands the folder tree to the specified depth.
- Expand All — Fully expands the entire folder tree.
- Show Colors — Toggles age-based color coding on the folder tree (see Options for the color thresholds).
- Link to Explorer — When enabled, clicking a folder in the Disk Recon tree simultaneously opens that folder in Windows Explorer.
- Sort by Name / Size / Number of Files — Changes the sort order of the folder tree.
- Show Drives — Collapses the tree back to the top-level drive list.
- Mark All Files — Checks every file in the duplicate results for deletion.
- Unmark All Files — Clears all checkboxes.
- Invert Selection — Toggles every checkbox: checked becomes unchecked and vice versa. Useful for keeping one copy from each duplicate group while marking the rest.
- Mark All Files from same Folder — Marks all duplicates that share the same parent folder as the currently selected file.
- Mark All Files from same Folder + Subfolders — Same as above but also includes duplicates in subfolders of that folder.
- Delete Marked Files — Permanently deletes all checked files. This cannot be undone.
Calculation
- Use Real Drive Cluster Size — Reads the actual cluster (allocation unit) size from the scanned drive and uses it when calculating wasted (slack) space. This gives the most accurate result.
- 0.5K – 64K Cluster Size — Manually sets a fixed cluster size for wasted-space calculations. Use this when scanning a network drive whose cluster size cannot be read automatically, or to model a hypothetical reformatting scenario.
View Mode
- Large Icons / Small Icons / List / Details — Changes how files are displayed in the result grid. Details view shows the full column layout and is the most useful for analysis.
Tools
- Open Control Panel — Brings the Control Panel into focus if it is hidden or behind another panel.
- Add/Remove software — Opens the Windows Programs and Features (or Apps) control panel.
- Open Recycle Bin — Opens the Windows Recycle Bin in File Explorer.
- Empty Recycle Bin — Permanently deletes all items currently in the Recycle Bin.
Help
- Disk Recon Help — Opens this help documentation.
- Check for new Version — Connects to the Blacksun Software website to check whether a newer version of Disk Recon is available.
- Enter Registration Key — Opens the registration dialog where you enter your name and license key after purchasing.
- About — Shows the current version number and build information.
Toolbar
- Start Scan — Starts a scan using the current Control Panel settings (shortcut: F5).
- Stop Scan — Aborts the running scan and shows partial results (shortcut: Escape).
- Export to MS Excel / HTML / Text / CSV / XML — Exports the current result set to the chosen format.
- Show File Sizes — Displays each file's actual size (the data the file contains).
- Show Allocated Sizes — Displays the disk space each file actually occupies, including NTFS cluster rounding. Always equal to or larger than the file size.
- Show Wasted File Sizes — Displays only the slack space per file (allocated size minus actual size). Useful for measuring the overhead of many small files on a drive with large clusters.
- Show Sizes in B / KB / MB / GB — Sets the display unit for all size columns.
- Show Large Icons / Small Icons / List / Details — Switches the result grid view mode.
- Show Explorer Tree — Toggles the Folder Tree panel.
- Show File Preview — Toggles the File Preview panel.
- Show Image Preview — Toggles the Image Preview panel.
